    How cold will it be?

A Halloween character is covered in snow at a park display after a fall storm sweeps through the Intermountain West on October 26, 2020, in Denver.

Halloween 2023 will be cold for millions across the country on Tuesday, as some of the coldest air of the season will move into the central and eastern U.S., and only the Southeast and Southwest will be spared the worst of Halloween's cold, forecasters said.

In fact, almost the entire northern tier of the United States will see cold weather on Halloween, all the way from the Pacific Northwest to New England.

In the densely populated Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, winter weather will see snow accumulation and, for some, hard freezes. This will be the coldest air since last spring, according to AccuWeather.

“Those who wear heavy clothing with many layers will be more alert about staying warm than their compatriots who don't,” said Bill Deger, AccuWeather's chief meteorologist. “Temperatures will reach the 30s Tuesday evening in most inland areas and the 40s in major cities along I-95 and near the coast,” he added, with a pesky breeze adding to the cold.

Although much of the eastern United States will be dry on Halloween, some rain is possible in parts of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England.

Extremely cold temperatures will reach the central United States

Most of the central United States will also see a very cold holiday.

“The scariest day on the calendar may have some tricks up its sleeve this time around, as record cold spreads its strange twist from the southern Plains into the central and southern Appalachians,” said Cody Snell, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center.

“As night falls, temperatures will be extremely cold while dipping into the teens and 20s in most locations, giving even the bravest late-night pranksters chills,” he added.

Some of the coldest temperatures will come throughout the central and northern Rockies and northern Plains, with temperatures dropping into the single digits in some areas, the National Weather Service said.

Storms and lake ice are possible in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, the weather service said. “These storms may have high snowfall rates and quickly reduce visibility,” Snell said. “Snow showers accompanying the lake may also make for a winter night of trick-or-treating,” he said.

The southwest and southeast will enjoy moderate weather

Some of the best weather in the country on Halloween will be across the Southwest and Southeast. In Phoenix, for example, evening temperatures should be in the 70s under clear skies.

In Southern California, the hot, dry Santa Ana winds that swept through the region on Monday are expected to subside somewhat by Tuesday, the weather service said, but fears of fiery weather remain.

Florida will typically be warm and humid on Halloween, with only some light evening rain possible along southeastern parts of the state.
