We actually created this kana testing tool a few years ago as a companion to the Hiragana Learning Guide and the Katakana Learning Guide. Since then, many beginner-level Japanese language learners have used it as a tool to test their knowledge of kana, simply practicing reading kana over and over again.
There are a few things we like about our Kana testing tool. I hope you like it too.

You can choose which kana you want to practice.
If you are still trying to memorize all the kana, you may want to be tested using only the kana you have already studied. Many testing tools allow you to practice on a randomly selected set of tests. While these can be great when you are familiar with all the kana. Our testing tool allows you to select the kana you want to practice through the kana column. This way you can focus only on the specific things you want to practice.
- You are forced to “try” to remember.
Testing tools usually give you the correct answer immediately when you get something wrong. Well, our testing tool doesn't do that. This is because we want you to try hard to remember what the character is. There's no reason to rush here. Take your time to stare and pay attention to the shape of the character. Try to remember how you met the character in the first place (“What mnemonic did you use for this kana?” etc.).
- You can identify which kana you are still having trouble with.
On the results page, you'll see which channel you had difficulty with. It will show you which kana you got incorrectly, as well as the number of failed attempts you made. This tells you which kana you want to focus on more. It might help to trace that kana with your finger. Or, if you realize that the kana method of remembering doesn't quite work for you, you can even come up with your own way of remembering it.
