Partisan politics brought the Oregon legislature to a standstill. The 43-day strike by 9 Republican senators and 1 independent was the longest strike in state legislative history. Although Republicans were in the minority, Democrats could not move forward without them. Those who withdrew put their won political futures on the line, defying the voter-approved measure that was supposed to prevent this from happening.
