- The central and western states are likely to see temperatures above average.
- Temperatures may be near average in the east.
- The Southeast can be humid while the central United States is drier than average.
December could bring much warmer than average conditions across the central and western United States, according to an updated forecast released Thursday by The Weather Company, an IBM Business, and Atmopheric G2.
Temperatures likely to be warmer than average in the Midwest, Plains, and West: The region from the Pacific Northwest to the upper Midwest has the highest probability of well above average temperatures in December.
Other parts of the Plains and West are also expected to be above average.
However, the back half of December is expected to be cooler than the beginning, according to Dr. Todd Crawford, deputy chief meteorologist at Atmospheric G2.
Most areas of the East could see temperatures close to average: Conditions are expected to be slightly cooler than average along the East Coast into Florida. Fluctuations in temperature, both cold and warm, may disappear when looking at the entire month.
The Southeast may have a rainy month while the central United States remains dry: Parts of the Gulf Coast up to the Carolinas will likely have wetter than average conditions in December.
Winters in the Southeast are typically wetter than average during El Niño.
Areas from the northern Rockies to the Great Lakes have the highest chance of below-average precipitation.
