A coastal storm may slow early Christmas travel on the East Coast next week
A storm system developing in the Gulf of Mexico this week will have far-reaching impacts across the eastern U.S. After heavy rain and increased risk of flash flooding in Florida, the storm is moving toward the East Coast. This will result in chaotic weather that may cause some headaches for early holiday travelers.
Texas faces the risk of flooding through Friday
A storm moving across the south-central United States brought snow to the high plains of Colorado and New Mexico and heavy rain elsewhere. Heavy rain is expected to fall on Thursday in parts of Texas, where the risk of flash floods is high. This threat continues in the Lone Star State on Friday but moves east on Saturday.
Solar storms could change railway signals in 'worst case scenario', study finds
Geomagnetic storms result from the interaction of charged particles emitted by the Sun with the Earth's atmosphere. A study published this week found that in a “worst-case scenario,” a strong solar storm could cause signals used to direct trains to the appropriate tracks to change on their own.
