A football club expressed its “total shock” after one of its players was shot in the arm during a match.
The man was injured just after 9pm while playing for Rearcross FC during a match in Co Tipperary against Ballymackey FC under floodlights on Saturday night.
Police in Ireland are investigating whether the player was hit by a stray bullet fired by a hunter near the stadium.
The player was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and taken by ambulance to hospital for further evaluation.
He was released from the hospital on Sunday morning with non-life-threatening injuries.
The club said in a statement: “Everyone at Rearcross FC was shocked by the turn of events last night when our Junior B team was playing a League Two match under the lights and a very serious incident occurred.”

“We are happy that our player is safe… We wish him a speedy recovery and let him know that the entire club is thinking of him and his family at this time.”
He thanked the players, the referee and the police for their assistance.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have been fishing in the area at the time to come forward.
