Weather in America: December 6, 2023

FOX Weather has you covered with breaking forecasts and weather headlines for the weather in America on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Get the latest news from FOX meteorologist Britta Merwin.

Welcome to FOX Weather's daily weather update. It's Wednesday, December 6, 2023, and there are only 25 days left in the year. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick summary of the national, regional and local weather whenever you want with the FOX Weather Update podcast.

Deadly floods hit the Pacific Northwest as 'Pineapple Express' submerges Washington, Oregon

Rivers in Western Washington are bursting their banks and flooding neighborhoods as an atmospheric river event known as the Pineapple Express drenches the Pacific Northwest for a third day. Many counties across the region are under a flood warning, with some rivers near populated areas in the western Washington foothills reaching “major” flood stage. Up to 3-7 inches of rain fell in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains, with local amounts of 8-10 inches in the Cascade Mountain foothills northeast of Seattle. More rain is on the way before the event begins to taper off later Wednesday.

At least two deaths have been attributed to the atmospheric river in Oregon, both of which involved swollen creeks.

A double whammy of snow and severe storms is looking forward to the weekend

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a storm system is expected to hit the eastern half of the United States this weekend, bringing with it heavy snow, widespread rain and severe storms. However, it is important to note that the system is still a few days away, and there is a possibility of changes in the forecast.

All signs point to a drop in low pressure from the western United States late this week, resulting in a shallow low developing over the central Plains on Friday. Exactly where this low develops and the paths will determine who will get rain versus snow.

A 40-mile-wide iceberg in Antarctica, the world's largest and weighing a trillion tons, is on the move after decades of resting on the sea floor, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) announced.
