Rescuers in the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, recovered a baby girl alive from under the rubble after an Israeli air strike.

People used their hands to pull Maryam Abu Akl out from under the rubble, before a rescuer ran with her to a nearby hospital.

    Doctors there cleaned her wounds.

Reuters reported that the child was taking shelter in a house with her family when the raid occurred that killed her mother and sister. Her father and younger brother survived.

The airstrike killed 20 people and injured 55 others, according to a spokesman for the Hamas-run Ministry of Health.

More than 21,500 people, most of them children and women, were killed during Israeli retaliatory attacks on Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry. It is believed that thousands more are still under the rubble of buildings destroyed by air and artillery strikes.

Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people – most of them civilians – and taking about 240 hostage.
