I have lived in Whitefish, Montana for five years, and have traveled extensively through the western national parks. I think Glacier is the most beautiful national park, with its jagged mountains and incredible views around every corner. I also think spring, which in Montana means before the 4th of July, is the best time to visit the glacier, and here’s why….
Cycling goes the way of the sun
Going to the Sun Road is the first to be registered as a National Historic Place, a National Historic Landmark, and a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, but it's the beauty of the drive that keeps people coming back in droves.
Normally, it's hard to enjoy the gorgeous views with all the traffic and turns, but there's a magic window, usually between Memorial Day and Father's Day, when the road is closed to cars but open to bikes. There are also bike rental services, including Ebikes, to take you back from Avalanche Camp Where your journey begins.
Rafting on the Flathead River
The Middle Fork of the Flathead River is the first nationality to be classified as a Wild and Scenic River. It flows unobstructed 240 miles from its source in British Columbia past Glacier National Park. Ice raft company It offers a great half-day or full-day paddling tour with nine named rapids, but is even better during the spring.
Since it is a free-flowing river, the melting ice maintains an ideal water level, so the trip is enjoyable and safe. Wildlife are also more active throughout the day in the spring rather than sleeping in the middle of the day to avoid the summer heat.
Solitude Hiking Trail in the Cedars
With its dense tree cover and low elevation, Cedar trail It is a favorite hike on the glacier. It is so popular during the summer that it is difficult to find a parking space and difficult to be alone on the road.
This is all different before the summer rush. Everything is naturally quieter before the Fourth of July, but with so many people riding bikes, the trails are especially empty.
Icy views of Lake McDonald
The views from Lake McDonald are stunning in the spring because more snow falls on the mountains. Spring is definitely a good time to see glaciers at Glacier.
There are plenty of rooms in the hostel
the Belton Chalet It stands up to dining experiences across the country with filets so tender you could cut them with a butter knife and apples so crunchy you'll save room for dessert. It's so good and so close to the glacier that it's hard to find a table. Unless you are coming in the off season. There's still great food and great views, but without any of the hassle.
Camping with a view
Maybe I'm getting soft, but I hate camping in tents in the rain. Fortunately, there is ample availability West Glacier RV Park and Cabins Before the height of summer. I would much rather hear the pitter-patter of rain on a tin roof than a rainfly falling on a rainfly.
Bluebird days
If you stay on the glacier long enough, you may be lucky enough for the clouds to disperse and the sunshine to stream in. They say you can enjoy all four seasons in a Montana spring. This includes spring bluebird days with summer sun but no crowds.
Rainy day activities
You can't rely on sunshine all spring, so it's best to have some rainy day plans. Rafting in the rain is great because you will get wet anyway. Of course, there's nothing like grabbing a pie Icy National Pizza And a half liter in Calm down And just stay warm and dry.
Play golf on Sun Road
Whether you like dad jokes or not, flexibility is key to dealing with the weather. Why let the rain dampen your spirits when you can wait for a break in the rain and play an easy 18 in mini golf? Play golf on Sun Road? Plus, if it starts raining again, you're right around the corner planning your replacement pizza and pint.
Sleeper to Seattle
West Glacier Village has a population of 174 and has its own Amtrak station (Belton). the Great Northern Railway The See America First campaign promoted train access to Glacier National Park from its inception in 1910 to the present day when there is still direct passenger service from Seattle.
The unparalleled availability of food and lodging at West Glacier during the spring season makes a drive-thru visit not only possible, but practical! You can even book rafting in Ice raft company at West Glacier and arrange for a bike tour to take you to your cabin (or room in the Belton Chalet) as well.
