Atlanta-based singer-songwriter Jordan Reynolds, also known as Rose Hotel, has released a new song titled “Drown.” It is taken from her upcoming album Pawn surrender, which arrives June 7 via Strolling Bones Records. Check it out below.
Reynolds explained in a statement that “Drown” is about confronting the reality of intergenerational trauma and mental illness. “It's about realizing that the only way to break this vicious cycle is to address it head on and choose to heal rather than continue patterns of violence and abuse. It's my attempt to claim power and ownership of my own life by releasing family relationships that may never heal. The lazy rock energy sounds like my teens The rebel and cynic in me had finally told them how I really felt.
Reynolds co-produced the new album with Damon Moon and Graham Tavel before bringing in producer Drew Vandenberg to provide mixing and additional production. She worked with a group of studio musicians who have played with SJ Goodman, Margo Price, Caitlin Rose, and more.
“I was playing a lot of chess when I wrote this album, so I started thinking about these songs as if they were all different pieces on a board that represented different aspects of my songwriting, my personality, and my experience,” Reynolds said. “Each piece has its own purpose and its own power to draw from, but you can't play the game with just your queen or your knights, or anything else. This became a comfortable idea and ethos to work within — not just accepting diversity but finding its inherent value. I went into the studio without any A fear of being across the board. I wanted to be limitless in letting my influences shine through the music in different ways. The outlines of Rose Hotel are my lyricism and my voice, but musically, I wanted to expand.
