Today, Thursday, Sweden officially joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in a historic expansion of the military alliance.
The historic expansion of the military alliance – which Finland also joined last year – began with Russia's war in Ukraine. Both Sweden and Finland have set aside years of military non-alignment to seek security within NATO after the Russian invasion in 2022. Their membership is expected to strengthen NATO's capabilities in the Upper North and the Baltic Sea.
NATO member states and allies, including the United States, have provided Ukraine with more than $175 billion in military, financial and humanitarian aid since the Russian invasion.
