The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Los Angeles County on Thursday as an unusually strong storm moved through the region, meteorologists said.
The warning, which described a “strong thunderstorm” moving east at 10 mph and bringing possible winds of 55 mph and pea-sized hail, was issued at 4:13 p.m. for areas of Los Angeles County, including San Dimas, Glendora and Pomona. . These areas may witness a storm accompanied by strong winds, hail, and heavy rain for a short period.
The San Fernando Valley experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning between 4 and 4:45 p.m.
This type of strong, short-lived storm is relatively uncommon in Los Angeles, said Joe Cerar, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.
“It's unusual, but when we have the right kind of weather pattern, we have all the ingredients,” Cerar said. “The strength of these storms is pretty unusual, I'll say that.”
