Engel-Schmidt revealed that a new committee will be formed to suggest women who deserve to be commemorated in Danish cities. It will be made up of experts who will identify important and neglected female figures from Danish history and suggest locations for new statues.
Actress Betty Nansen and writer Lise Norgaard are two women who were recently commemorated with statues in Copenhagen and Roskilde.
Engel-Schmidt suggested giving statues to pastry chef Karin Wolf, Nielsen Nielsen, Denmark's first female doctor, and Bodil Bjetrup, the country's first female ambassador.
The 40-year-old minister also put out a call for suggestions on who deserves to be commemorated on social media.
“Will the next generation really grow up in cities with more statues of mythical beasts and horses than women? No!” he wrote. “But please help with some input here. Who have we lost and where?”
