Batya Ungar SargunThis week's interview from The War Room with Steve Bannon was like no other.
Bhatia, a former liberal from Queens and opinion editor for… NewsweekShe shared her journey from hard-left New Yorker to Trump supporter. This is amazing! The way you describe Trump Nation is perfect. The left will never get this. The elites will never understand this. But this is why we fear him and his MAGA movement.
Trump speaks on behalf of the American worker. Trump represents American greatness and working Americans. Elites can never break that bond between him and the American people.
“Donald Trump is like a New Deal Democrat,” Bhatia says.
Steve Bannon: I want to talk about whether you say you're a liberal or a progressive, but this book, I know you're going to come up with a bigger media blitz later, but Second Class is one of the definitive works out there. It's about to go out. How do you say you are liberal? When I read it and feel like I'm reading a MAGA writer?
Batya Ungar Sargun: Well, to me, Donald Trump is a bit like a New Deal Democrat. This is something I tried to explain to Bill Maher as well. To Democrats and liberals, Trump is an extremist, but to Trump supporters, he is a moderate, if not a liberal. His point on abortion, 16 weeks, right? This was the Democrats' view until the 1990s. His view on immigration is that mass immigration is a class war against the working class. This was the Democrats' view until the 1990s. Bernie Sanders in 2015, open borders. This is the proposal of the Koch brothers. right? You remember that Trump is pro-black. He's courting black voters. He is pro-gay. I hear that from his supporters all the time, and they love that about him. That's what Democrats used to be, and now that's what MAGA is. And I say that with a lot of love and respect.
Steve Bannon: So how do you talk about that as a liberal, you've been ostracized because you're on the side of the working class. How could that be? Democrats tell us all the time that they are the party of the working class.
Batya Ungar Sargun: No, this is complete nonsense. Democrats are the party of college-certified elites and the dependent poor. So all their politics are either about flattering the egos of the rich or supporting the poor. This won't work. Meanwhile, everyone in the middle, the hard-working people who listen to your show, who you know and who you respect, were not represented by either party until Trump came along. Trump appeared and said, wait a minute. Why does no one stand with the hardworking American? And what I did in this book was I traveled around the country and interviewed working-class Americans. Let me tell you something, Steve, and you know this. Working-class Americans, whether they vote Democratic or Republican, whether they are liberal or conservative, they all have the same views. For example, neither party really talks to them. They all generally agree on the most important issues. Polarization is a completely elitist phenomenon.
…So the elites are very polarized. If you talk to someone who was in college, conservative or liberal, someone who works in the media elites, someone who works in the political elites, they look at the party platform, whether it's the Republican platform or the Democratic platform, and they re-like and check and check. Everything the party says to them is good and right, to which they agree. So there is no natural connection between support for abortion on demand, belief in climate change, and support for open borders. These things are grouped together because they are all in the interests of leftist elites. And so, if you belong to those leftist elites, you feel like these are all my priorities. If you are a hardworking American, these are not your priorities. You go to case after case and say, well, I'm a Christian, so I would never have an abortion, but I know someone who was raped, so I don't want it banned. You might say, well, I have a family member who is gay, and I want them to be treated with dignity, but I have a school for kids and I'm terrified of the transgender agenda. right. This happens because the American working class is very tolerant, and that is how they deal with the world.
