New satellite images reveal construction work on a former Wagner Group base at Modibo Keita International Airport in Mali.
High-resolution images obtained by Sky News provide the first detailed picture of this site since then Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin diesin August 2023.
Since then, the organization has been turned inward, with its functions absorbed by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
The remnants of the Wagner Group are now reportedly being operated under the name of the Russian “Reconnaissance Corps”.
When he died, Prigozhin's death sparked speculation about the future of Russian influence and military presence in Africa.
For years, the Wagner Group has played a key role in supporting allied regimes across the continent, benefiting from arrangements such as mining and logging concessions.
Construction on the former Wagner base
Satellite images taken by Maxar on February 26, and obtained by Sky News, indicate that the Russian state remains committed to developing its presence in Mali.
The photo shows construction work on the site of the former Wagner base at Modibo Keita International Airport, Mali's main airport located about 15 kilometers from the capital, Bamako.
In recent months, new buildings and roads appear to have been completed, a large area of land has been cleared, and excavation work has begun in two areas.
Reviewing the images, Defense Intelligence Agency Janes reported that two of the new, larger features resembled a possible new office building and a re-examined storage area.
In addition to showing the progress of construction at this site, the photos indicate that it is much more active than in the past.
There are more than 40 vehicles of different sizes, compared to a small number in July.
Russian activity in the region
Indicates expansion and increased activity at this location Prigozhin's death The subsequent reorganization of the Wagner Group's operations did not dampen the Russian government's interest in maintaining its presence in Mali and the wider region.
In recent months, recruitment advertisements for the Russian African Legion have been circulating on the Telegram app, touting “high payments, free medical care” and “service under competent commanders.”
The country now enjoys positive relations with several regimes throughout the Sahel, as it has sought to exploit areas where Western influence is declining.
