MEMPHIS, TN – When it comes to Memphis Light, Gas and Water, talk to almost any customer and they'll likely have a wish list of what the utility could do better.
Customer concerns about bills, coupled with growing demand for electricity and natural resources, are why MLGW is looking toward the future.
Company President and CEO Doug McGuinn says they plan to meet with the public to get input on a new 20-year strategic plan called “MLGW 2045.”
“It's important to take a look ahead because the challenges aren't going to get any easier,” McGowen said. “Our goal is to be not only reliable, but also flexible and ready to meet the challenges of the future.”
The MLGW team will examine industry trends such as infrastructure, green energy, new technology and obtain customer expectations.
It seems that the plan will not mean an increase in the rate.
“I think in '26 and '27 there's no expectation that water or gas prices will increase,” McGowen said.
In the wake of power outages following recent storms, the company expects to hear the call to install underground lines.
“I anticipate that this is what the community will be talking about in planning for 2045. This is a resiliency measure to improve reliability and resilience to storms.
McGowen says their plan is also to make things more affordable for customers, whether continuing to get power from TVA or investing billions in underground power lines.
“If everyone really wanted reliability, we could do it (subway lines), but it would cost a lot of money and everyone would have to pay more every month,” he said. “But that's the kind of balance we're looking for.”
