For decades, American sports fans have welcomed Bob Costas into their homes with open arms as he provides thoughtful commentary and analysis regarding sports.
All that time, it seems the veteran TV personality harbored a deep personal hatred for many of us.
Costas on Sunday during an interview on CNN referred to the people who support former President Donald Trump's bid for the White House — people who need immediate relief from inflation and illegal immigrant crime — as “toxic” and delusional.
The comments came as the 71-year-old attacked Trump while speaking with network host Michael Smerconish.
To be fair, Trump is a public figure and is vulnerable to criticism from anyone who may not like his politics, personality, or policies.
In sports – which is Costas' area of expertise – the team's coach or players are always vulnerable to criticism. Unless something really terrible happens, fans are off limits.
But Costas took a hateful rhetoric against Trump and spoke out about those who want changes in a country that until the time of his comments was fundamentally broken. He attacked the America's team fans.
Smerconish welcomed one of the most prominent voices in American sports in recent decades to his show, and what that voice said was downright unfortunate.
The host asked Costas to clarify before stating that he does not support Trump in the upcoming election.
“Yes, absolutely,” Costas said. “He is by far the most disgraced figure in modern presidential history. He has become more shameful since 2016 and since 2020. He has a cauldron of unsavory traits.
Bob Costas: Trump is the “most shameful figure” in history, and his supporters are a “toxic cult”

Costas has a right to his opinion, and he is wealthy and thus largely insulated from the issues that Americans and sports fans face — issues like immigrant crime, fentanyl overdose deaths, and the fact that barbecuing on game days is now too expensive for people.
Then he unleashed on ordinary Americans whose only desire was to preserve their country by electing someone who would not allow the invasion of male foreign nationals.
People who don't intend to vote for more inflation, more wars, more debt and less prosperity next November are all in a “cult,” Costas said.
“It's just those who actually suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, which is how they and Fox News and all the other MAGA media try to ignore all legitimate criticism of Trump,” he told CNN viewers.
He continued: “You would have to be in the midst of some kind of toxic delusion and in a toxic cult to believe that Donald Trump was in any way emotionally, psychologically, intellectually, or morally qualified to be president of the United States.” . But his supporters are preoccupied with that.”
Costas made some criticism of Biden, but hilariously concluded that “there is no cult of Joe Biden.”
Joe Biden is accused of being at the head of a scheme in which his family profited from his name and then paid him for it.
Joe Biden allows thousands of military-age men to enter this country every day for no good reason. Last week, someone allegedly killed a nursing student in Georgia who was out for a jog.
The President has made grocery shopping unsustainable, and has lied and embellished his way into making the American dream a fantasy.
There is a cult of Biden that excuses his failures and abuse of Americans, and Costas is too deeply involved to see that.
