Four people have died and others are believed to have been injured after an avalanche in a French valley.

A massive search and rescue operation began after the snow cover slid in the town of Mont-Dore in the center of the country France Sunday afternoon.

About 50 rescuers participated, including specialized mountain police, as well as dogs specially trained to find avalanche victims.

Mont-Dore Mayor, Sebastien Dubourg, praised those involved in the rescue operation.

“The snow in Val d'Envver is heavy. It is oppressive. The mountain, unfortunately, is stronger than us,” he was quoted as saying by the regional news site La Montagne.

The local prosecutor's office opened an investigation into what happened.

Joel Mathurin, governor of the Puy-de-Dôme region, sent his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. He also asked everyone to exercise maximum caution in the area.
