    In 1770, inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen claimed to have created a machine that could skillfully play chess against human opponents. His machine, known as the Mechanical Turk, defeated many rivals, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Benjamin Franklin, and caused much astonishment and debate about how it worked.
