Some tough news on the injury front for Atlanta.
Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks have had a struggle so far in the 2023-24 season, to say the least, as the team prepares to return from the All-Star break festivities. Young may have been playing the best basketball of his career in recent months, and his efforts were rewarded with a trip to Indiana for the big game last weekend, but that hasn't translated into many wins for the Hawks, who currently sit in 10th place. A place in the predicament that is the defining picture of the Eastern Conference.
Things won't get any easier as Atlanta progresses. Recently, Hawks coach Quin Snyder announced that backup center Onyeka Okongwu, who is dealing with a left toe sprain, “will not be available for the foreseeable future,” according to ESPN (via the Associated Press).
This comes at a time when the Hawks were ready to return center Clint Capela, who has missed time in recent weeks with an injury of his own.
Although Capela will return to the lineup when the Hawks take the field on Friday night against the Toronto Raptors, it appears the team will be more cautious in bringing him back after he missed six straight games with a left adductor muscle strain.
“We'll have Clint back but he'll be in a situation where it's been a few weeks since he's played and I'm sure he'll be subject to some type of minutes restriction. Those are things we just need to continue to work through,” Snyder said.
The Hawks and Raptors tip off at 7:30 PM ET.
