Temperatures rose across Japan as warm air flowed in from the south, with daytime temperatures reaching a record high for February in many locations in northern Japan, the meteorological agency said.

The temperature rose to 17.1 degrees Celsius in the city of Mombetsu in Hokkaido, matching the usual temperatures in late June, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The unusually high temperature was 18.8 degrees above average for this time of year and surpassed the previous record of 12.6 degrees set in 1960, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) on Monday.

Temperatures also reached 20.1 degrees in the city of Akita in northern Japan, 21.8 degrees in the city of Kanazawa in central Japan, and 16.5 degrees in central Tokyo.

The unusually warm weather is expected to continue in many parts of Japan on Tuesday, the Meteorological Agency said, adding that the highest temperature during the day is expected to reach 24 degrees in the city of Shizuoka and 22 degrees in central Tokyo.

Meteorological officials warned of the possibility of rain falling in large areas in northern and eastern Japan, which will lead to the rapid melting of snow, and called on people to be cautious of the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas, rising river levels, and avalanches.
