London: It is the Australian honey that has caused a stir in British high society.
They say it's so good that shoppers at Harrods, the world's most famous luxury department store, are paying more than $1,000 per jar.
Described as a new, healthier alternative to fine wines, the three rare Australian wines – which are produced in the famous biodiversity hotspot in southwestern Australia where more than 8,000 rare wildflower species thrive – are limited to just 888 jars per batch. Each comes in an elegant gift box, individually numbered jar with 22k gold lettering, handcrafted Australian wood lid, and hand blown glass honey dipper.
“You know that if you want good champagne, you have to go to the Champagne region [of France]. “If you want great whisky, go to Scotland, and if you want the best honey in the world, it's from southwest Australia,” says company co-founder Rick Baines.
The exclusive Australia Rare collection made the journey for the first time from the region blessed with the highest concentration of rare and endangered species in Australia to the fashionable shelves of London's Knightsbridge last August. The ecoregion extends from Shark Bay, about 800 kilometers north of Perth, to Esperance in the south, covering 48.9 million hectares of land.
The nectar of the Jarrah flower produces one of the best types of honey in the world. This is probably why a 250g jar will cost you £750 ($1,444).
Bains says the three flavors from local flowering trees, including Curry (£500 a jar) and Dota (£600), were selected by a team of honey sommeliers and scientists from hundreds of different batches – all made by partners from across the diversity. Unique biological. A hotspot to represent the best of every season.
“This type of honey is exceptionally pure and full of the nutrition that only the best honey has,” he says.
