The UN Supreme Court is scheduled to begin public hearings on Monday on the legality of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

The six-day hearing could increase political pressure on Israel over the war in Gaza, although its focus is on a broader issue: control of the occupied West Bank, annexed East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.

The United States is scheduled to participate on Wednesday, along with Egypt, Russia, and France. Chinese officials are scheduled to appear on Thursday. Israel will not attend.

Israel It is not considered to be “occupying” Gaza, under the pretext that it relinquished control of the Strip in 2005, when it unilaterally withdrew. However, human rights groups say Israel has maintained control over Gaza in other ways, including through the blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt when the armed group Hamas seized power in 2007. The Biden administration has said there should be no “reoccupation” of Gaza as a result of the current conflict.

This is not the first time this matter has been raised. In 2022, the UN General Assembly asked the International Court of Justice – established to adjudicate cases between countries – to give a non-binding “advisory” opinion on the decades-long occupation.

The UN Security Council is expected to vote this week on a draft resolution drafted by Algeria calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Washington, one of the five permanent members of the Security Council with veto power, said it would not support the measure.

Here's what else you should know

On Sunday, the Israeli government approved a declaration saying that the country will not recognize a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu He said The decision came “in light of the statements recently heard in the international community about the attempt to unilaterally impose a Palestinian state on Israel.” The peace plan that the United States and Arab countries are developing calls for setting a timetable for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Nasser Hospital, the largest medical facility in the southern Gaza Strip, “is no longer operational.” The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Sunday, days after the Israeli raids. He added that there are still about 200 patients in the hospital, and that at least 20 need to be transferred to other hospitals to receive urgent care.

At least 28,985 people have been killed in Gaza and 68,883 injured since the war began, According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in the Hamas attack on October 7.
