The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has spoken frankly about the “not if but when” reality of a new pandemic, which he refers to as “Disease X.”
During his speech in Dubai during the World Government Summit, Tedros claimed that despite the current focus on Covid-19, the concept of “Disease X” has been part of the global health conversation for years, representing the unknown pathogen that could cause a future pandemic.
“History teaches us that the next pandemic is a question of when, not if,” Tedros said. “It could be caused by an influenza virus, or a new coronavirus, or it could be caused by a new pathogen that we don't know about yet, or what we call Disease X.”
The term “Disease Interestingly, Dr Tedros suggested that Covid-19 itself was a form of “Disease X”, a previously unknown virus that sparked a global crisis.
“But there will be another disease X or disease Y or disease Z,” he added.

Last year, Tony Blair, the former UK Prime Minister, called for the development of a “national digital infrastructure” to facilitate the distribution of new vaccines and determine who is and who is not vaccinated against future pandemics.
“You have to know who has been vaccinated and who has not,” Blair said at the World Economic Forum summit. “Some of the vaccines that are coming in the future will be multiple. There will be multiple shots. So you must have reasons related to health care in general. But certainly, for a pandemic or vaccines, you have to have a proper digital infrastructure. Many countries do not have that and most countries do not have that.
According to Blair, the rollout of these new vaccines highlights the need for countries to invest in “national digital infrastructure.”
