KIMT News 3's Emma Estep broadcasts live how this event will highlight the many diverse groups in the Mediterranean city
Rochester, Minn. – Food, dancing and a celebration of the Mediterranean city's diversity – these are three things you can look forward to at Mayo High School's second annual Cultural Night on February 17.
The event attracted about 400 people last year – inspiring the Mayo Equity team to host the event at night for all members of the community to attend.
Over nine different cultures will be represented through different styles of dance and food at the celebration. A diverse group of current Mayo students along with a few from nearby high schools will perform based on a variety of customs – which include traditions from Vietnam, Ethiopia, Mexico and India.
“We try to showcase all the cultures and diversity that exist within the Rochester Public School District,” says Yahya Ahmed, equity specialist at Mayo High School. “This also gives our students and community members an opportunity to network and showcase their skills.”
The break will give attendees the opportunity to try different foods from around the world prepared by the participating teams. Mayo student Helen Girma says this is a great way to expose the community to different cultures.
“You might see some of the dances we do at like weddings and stuff, but it's fun to have them and experience them in our school community,” says Girma. “And also highlight the different groups that we have in Rochester.”
People are encouraged to dress in their culturally representative clothing for the event.
It is free to attend and the event is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 5:00pm to 8:00pm in the Mayo High School auditorium.
