Imprisoned Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has died, the prison service in the region where he was serving his sentence announced.
An outspoken critic of President Putin, he has been imprisoned since 2021 on charges widely seen as politically motivated.
Shortly after his death was announced, his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, said that the news had so far only come from government sources.
“We cannot really believe Putin and his government,” she told the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
She added that if reports of her husband's death are true, Putin and his allies must bear personal responsibility for her and for everything “they are doing to Russia.”
“I ask everyone here to unite and help punish the Russian regime,” she said.
