    What is snow thunder?

Thundersnow is as it suggests – a snowy thunderstorm. It is a rare phenomenon that usually only appears in strong winter storms.

“Thundersnow occurs when there is relatively strong instability and abundant moisture above the Earth’s surface, such as a warm front,” according to the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service.

NESDIS said thundersnow typically requires similar components of a thunderstorm to form such as moisture, instability and a lifting mechanism.
