WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – When inclement weather hits, school districts across the state have to decide how and when to spend time in the classroom.
Many school districts have a built-in number of “inclement weather make-up days.” Most schools like Westfield usually have 5 inclement weather days used for snow or extreme heat.
Various school districts typically make up for lost days by extending the last day of school in June beyond the scheduled date. 22News spoke with Stefan Czaporowski, Superintendent of the Westfield School District, who said, “I think 5 days is the standard, some go to 4. But typically you schedule 5 emergency closure days which are usually snow days because of the weather. But at the time Currently, the last day of school is Monday, June 17.
In other states, some schools will extend the school day, or cancel planned holidays
Avoid adding days to the end of the school year. But Tuesday was the second snowy day in Westfield so far this year.
If they have more snow days, the last day of school will be extended to June 21.
