This Barbie doll is having lunch with her fellow Oscar nominees.
The annual Academy Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles on Monday, and was attended by 179 of this year's nominees.
Each year, the Academy brings nominees from each category together for a meal (This year it was wild mushroom risotto) And the traditional “class image”.
Not all candidates were able to attend. For example, Color Purple star Danielle Brooks couldn't get away from filming Minecraft in New Zealand.
But there were plenty of other celebrities, costumes, poses, and unusual facial expressions to keep us entertained. Here are 10 highlights:
1. La La Land Reunion
When we wrote about the class photo in 2017, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were both nominated for La La Land.
For anyone with a short memory, La La Land is a movie that won Best Picture, then lost it again four minutes later due to an envelope-related mishap.
This year, Gosling and Stone are back at the Oscars, but for different films — they're nominated for Barbie and Poor Things, respectively.
Gosling wore a purple suit — likely intended as a subtle nod to his Best Picture nomination.
2. Two candidates formed the Representatives Club
Actor Sterling K. Brown and songwriter Diane Warren stood together in the back row, a fitting spot given that they both realize they're not at the front of their respective categories.
Last week, Brown told Graham Norton: “I know I'm not going to win, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'll tell you – [fellow nominee] Robert Downey Jr. will win. “And he deserves it so incredibly, he's a great actor… I'm happy to be in the room.”
Our hats off to the American fantasy star for following the awards race closely and knowing his odds in the supporting cast race.
But while Brown is a first-time nominee, Warren has been nominated 15 times for best original song — and has never won. Maybe you won't this year either, what are you made for? By Billie Eilish Hot Favorites.
Another Barbie song, I Just Kane, is also in the works, which Warren jokingly noted at the luncheon, telling Deadline: “You never know, they could cancel each other out.”
3. Is this…Godzilla?
Takashi Yamazaki, a member of the visual effects team nominated for Godzilla Minus One, brought an extra person to the event – Godzilla himself.
For the past few months, Yamazaki has been bringing the statue with him to red carpets and premieres, so it's only fair that the killer beast makes an appearance in the class photo as well.
4. A dog
Anyone who knows anything about cinema history knows that the greatest acting performance in any movie ever was the dog in this year's best picture contender, Anatomy of a Fall.
The dog known in the film as Snoop is actually a Border Collie named Missy, who traveled from France to attend the lunch with trainer Laura Martin-Contini.
Messi was very popular among actors at the event, including Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. Who was photographed meeting the dog. “Barn meets hacker,” read the excellent caption.
Sadly, Messi is not included in the class photo – something we can't understand because he's the ultimate good boy. We have sent a formal complaint to the Academy and will keep you informed of how the matter develops.
5. Carrie and Emily represented the Brits
Acting nominations this year are a bit sparse for Brits, with the only two being Oppenheimer's Emily Blunt and Maestro's Carey Mulligan.
Fortunately, they both made it to the luncheon and can be seen in the class photo. Although they did not pose together for the photo, The couple posed for photos together before the meal.
It's worth noting that the Irish stars have had another big year – with Barry Keoghan, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott all being nominated for awards including the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
However, only Blunt's Irish co-star, Cillian Murphy, was honored at the Oscars.
6. Save us a front row seat, please
If we were in a photo of the Oscars – this is the line where we would ask everyone to budge and make room, as the power of awards buzz is immense.
Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese, the directors of Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon respectively, were positioned near each other in the front row, along with two acting contenders.
They are Lily Gladstone, a strong Best Actress nominee for her performance in Scorsese's film, and The Holdovers star Daphne Joy Randolph – who is almost certain to win Best Supporting Actress.
7. Billie Eilish kept her look casual
It's always a pleasure to see Billie Eilish on the red carpet – she constantly steals the show with her interesting and innovative looks.
The Academy Luncheon was no different, with Eilish turning heads with her casual bandana, yellow jacket and tartan pants that matched her brother Finneas' outfit.
The duo is nominated in the Best Original Song category for “What Are You Made For?” – which has already won them a Grammy and a Golden Globe.
In fact, the award could be Barbie's best chance at an Oscar that night, with other films like Oppenheimer's likely to dominate many of the major categories.
8. We would like to be friends with this man
In the absence of Missy the dog, it's pretty clear who stole the show in this year's class photo.
To the right of the photo is a man crossing his arms – a notable pose in the photo as most people are looking straight ahead and smiling.
“I must know everything about this master. This is the energy we all need.” a fan of the film posted after the photo was released. “Kinda star of the picture” Another agreed.
The man in question is actually cinematographer Matthew Libatique – who was nominated for his work on Maestro, Bradley Cooper's biopic about Leonard Bernstein.
Libatique is so proud of his signature pose that he's pulled it off on the red carpet beforehand — something we'd do too if we had nails as gorgeous as his.
9. Barbie was not ignored
Barbie's Margot Robbie was happy to tune in this awards season, wearing outfits that would make her on-screen character proud. She continued the theme in an Oscar class photo.
Although Robbie and director Greta Gerwig missed nominations for Best Actress and Best Director, respectively, they were still present at the Oscars luncheon.
That's because both were nominated in other categories — Robbie as a producer, and thus a nominee for Best Picture, and Gerwig in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
Incidentally, Gerwig is standing to the right of producer and songwriter Mark Ronson, who is nominated for Best Original Song for “I'm Just Ken.”
10. If something is funny, please share it with the rest of the class, come on now, we all love a good joke
It takes more than half an hour to place all the candidates in their positions, as they are called one by one from their dinner tables.
But it takes a tremendous amount of effort to make sure everyone is prepared the second the photo is taken. Inevitably, there is always someone who is not.
In this year's class photo, we noticed at least two people blinking when they tapped the camera, thus appearing to have figured out how to sleep standing up.
But the most notable incident came from Anatomy of a Fall star Arthur Harary, who was nominated for Best Original Screenplay alongside his wife, Justine Tritt, who also directed the film.
Harari was seen laughing while taking the photo. It's not clear what made him explode, but we're betting Paul Giamatti had something to do with it.
The top favorite actor, shown standing to Harari's right, is known for his sense of humor, having delivered a series of comedic, self-deprecating acceptance speeches throughout awards season.
The 2024 Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be held in Los Angeles on March 10.
