The Furman University community is in mourning after the death of Bryce Stanfield, a junior defensive tackle for the Paladins football team, was announced Friday.

His death came two days after he suffered a medical emergency during training at Paladin Stadium. He was 21 years old.

University President Elizabeth Davis delivered the devastating news in a letter to the community:

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Furman University student Bryce Stanfield passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and family. Price, a junior health sciences major from Acworth, Georgia, was a defensive tackle on the Paladins' football team. According to medical personnel, Price collapsed unexpectedly during morning practice on Wednesday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was placed on life support.

Bryce excelled in the classroom and had aspirations of attending dental school after Furman. He equally shined on the football field and was beloved by his teammates and coaches. He loved getting local youth involved by serving in the Heller Men of Distinction, as well as reading to children in local schools. Bachelor's degree in Science, With great praiseIt was awarded this morning in a small private ceremony.

The University extends its heartfelt condolences to Price's family and friends at this time of tremendous loss. The entire Foreman community is deeply affected in times like these, and it is important that we support each other and ask for help if we need it.

We have reached out to the football team and others who know Bryce closely to offer advice and support. We will share information about funeral and memorial services as appropriate.

I would especially like to thank Coach Clay Hendricks, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Jason Donnelly and the staff in Athletics, Dean of Students Jason Cassidy and everyone in Student Life for their tireless acts of care and compassion.

Please take a moment to remember Bryce's life and all he gave to our community during his time at Furman. I hope everyone who knows him finds peace and comfort during this difficult time.

According to Yahoo Sports, Price was hospitalized and placed on life support after he collapsed during Wednesday's training session. His coaches stated that he was suffering from a back strain.

Furman coach Clay Hendricks issued a statement regarding the surprising loss to Stanfield in a statement from the university.

“We are deeply saddened by Bryce's sudden passing, and we ask everyone, first and foremost, to lift his parents, Fred and Terry Stanfield, and their families, in prayer on this day and in the days ahead,” Furman coach Clay said. Hendrix.

“There are a lot of people who are really hurting — and it's Bryce's teammates, coaches, staff, classmates, friends, the entire Furman community and beyond,” Hendricks added.

“Bryce was an outstanding young man, a student, a football player, and a good friend in equal measure. He was a huge part of who we are as a program and a school, playing a pivotal role in our success on the football field and by giving his time in outreach to our community. He was the best representative we could have ever had.” Meaning of the word. His passing is one of the hardest things Furman football has ever faced, but our faith and the many wonderful memories Bryce gave us will help us all in the days ahead.

According to a university statement, Stanfield, who is from Acworth, Georgia, was pursuing a degree in health sciences and had his sights set on dental school after his time at Furman. He was posthumously honored with a BSc Hons degree in a special ceremony.

On the field, Stanfield was a key player for the Paladins, starting all 13 games last season. He tallied 13 total tackles, four tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks, playing a vital role in Furman's impressive 10-3 season and capture of the 2023 Southern Conference championship title.

In addition to his contribution to football, he served in the Heller Distinguished Men's Service Corps at Furman and was an active participant in visiting patients at Greenville Children's Hospital and in reading to children in local schools.
