Social media has erupted with intense reactions after Chris Phillip, a prominent political figure, avoided a question regarding Rishi Sunak's allegedly controversial comments about the transgender community.
On Wednesday 7 February 2024, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak allegedly made an inappropriate joke about trans women to dig into Labor leader Keir Starmer's position on the definition of women. According to The Guardian, Mr Sunak said:
“It's kind of funny to hear about promises from someone who has broken every promise he was elected to make.”
During an interview on BBC Breakfast From Police Minister Chris Phelp, quizzed by host Naga Munchetty about alleged comments made by Rishi Sunak about trans women. According to The Mirror, despite being asked six times, he avoided questions and said:
“The Prime Minister was not talking about transgender issues.”
Philip's reluctance to address the issue on February 8, 2024 BBC Breakfast It left many netizens dissatisfied and demanding accountability. One user tweeted:
“Looks like government minister Chris Philp is taking a page from a politician's playbook on how to avoid a question! #BBCBreakfast But let's be real, we all know what he's really thinking. “I didn't come here to be questioned like no one else. 'Cheese sandwich!'”
Netizens unleashed criticism when Chris Phillip ignored questions about Sunak's transgender joke
On Wednesday 7 February 2024, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sparked outrage by allegedly joking about “the definition of a woman”. Responding to comments made by Labor leader Keir Starmer about women, Rishi described her as “a bit rich”. However, the incident became especially disturbing because transgender woman Brianna Guy's mother, Esther Guy, was also in the shared rooms.
Brianna was brutally murdered by her peers in 2023 when she was only 16 years old. As reported by The Big Issue, their sentences were carried out on 2 February 2024 by the judge, Mrs Justice Yip.
Therefore, the alleged joke made by the Prime Minister sparked widespread anger. However, on BBC BreakfastMs Munchetty asked Chris Phillip six times about comments made by the Prime Minister. According to The Mirror, Chris dodged the question and said:
“The Prime Minister made no reference at all to anyone being trans. It was Keir Starmer who introduced that. The Prime Minister was making a point about Labour's many ups and downs.”
Netizens criticized Philip's handling of the situation, saying elected officials have a responsibility to address issues of discrimination and bias.

Chris Phillip is a British politician who has been Secretary of State for Crime, Police and Fire since October 2022. He was first appointed as Secretary of State at the Home Office on 26 October 2022.
Between 14 October 2022 and 25 October 2022, Chris Phillip served as Chief Paymaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office. Previously, he was appointed Secretary-General of the Treasury from 6 September 2022 to 14 October 2022.
