The first major winter storm of the year could bring snow, ice and heavy rain
A brewing winter storm could hit major cities across the East Coast this weekend, potentially ending snow lines in some cities that have been in place for more than 700 days.
A low pressure area is expected to form Friday near the Gulf Coast before tracking down the East Coast over the weekend, affecting states from Texas to Maine.
While several inches of rain are possible in parts of the Southeast, precise snow totals are still in doubt as the status of this low pressure system will be critical to the forecast.
The West Coast is experiencing a series of storms
A series of powerful storms are targeting the western United States with heavy rain and feet of mountain snow.
Up to 3 feet of snow is possible in parts of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, and more snow is possible at higher elevations in the Cascades of Washington and Oregon.
The Quadrantid meteor shower will peak overnight
Considered one of the best meteor showers of the year, the Quadrantid meteor shower reaches its peak tonight, and you won't miss a glimpse of nearly 200 meteors per hour.
NASA says the peak of the Quadrantids occurs within a few hours, but the shower will produce very bright meteors called fireballs.
