Ben Armstrong, who was a popular cryptocurrency YouTuber known as “BitBoy,” has since lost everything — his fortune, his prized Lamborghini, his job, and now his wife, who recently filed for divorce.
The former graphic designer and car wash owner who overcame a methamphetamine addiction rose to fame six years ago by sharing advice about digital currency and advocating for investors.
His style of humor has appealed to ordinary people and those looking to get rich quick.
But the New York Times reported that cryptocurrencies have collapsed in the past two years, and that Armstrong, 41, who said he had $40 million in the currency, is now charged with extortion, theft, sexual harassment and workplace violence.
The collapse began in August when Armstrong was fired from his company, HIT Network, according to the outlet.
He was accused in a lawsuit of misusing steroids and throwing bottles of protein at company employees, allegations that Armstrong denied.
“Ben has lost track of the person he used to be,” TJ Shedd, Armstrong's former business partner, said in a statement to the Times. “He has caused serious damage to his professional and personal relationships.”
Shedd sued Armstrong for “illegally directing and transferring up to $50,000 per month to his mistress, Cassandra Wolfe.”
Armstrong's wife, Bethany, filed for divorce in October.
In January, the Atlanta influencer canceled his daily live show, telling his followers: “We're barely making it here, guys. We have attorneys coming to me from every angle.
He has claimed in social media posts and videos that he is the victim of a “criminal plot” by “terrorists” who took over his YouTube channel and declared that “BitBoy is dead.”
In another interview, he said: “I am going through a midlife crisis… a spiritual crisis.”
