    Ukraine and Russia exchanged about 200 prisoners of war from each side.

    The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the exchange included 195 soldiers from each side President Zelensky He said that 207 Ukrainians were released in an exchange on Wednesday.

    There was no immediate explanation for the different numbers.

    The Russian military said, without providing details or evidence, that Russian prisoners of war “faced mortal danger in captivity” and would be flown to Moscow for treatment and rehabilitation.

    The exchange comes a week after Russia accused Ukrainian forces Shooting down a military transport plane It carried Ukrainian prisoners of war, who were to be exchanged for their Russian counterparts.

    The Russian Defense Ministry said that missiles fired across the border brought down the plane in Russia's Belgorod region on January 24.

    Local authorities in Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, said that the accident resulted in the deaths of all 74 people on board, including six crew members and three Russian soldiers.

    Moscow said 65 Ukrainian prisoners were on board the plane.

    The incident also prompted some Russian officials to publicly question the possibility of future prisoner exchanges.

    Ukrainian officials confirmed last week that a prisoner exchange had been scheduled for that day, but said it had been cancelled.
