Fernando Alonso has declared that he has no intention of sitting “on the couch” to watch the “exciting” future of Formula 1.

Alonso will turn 43 midway through the 2024 season and is set to reach his 400th Grand Prix starting in Qatar, with Aston Martin keen to extend his contract beyond 2024.

In 2023, the two-time world champion has eight podium finishes and a fourth in the Drivers' Championship – his best performance since finishing runner-up to Sebastian Vettel in 2013.

Over recent years, Formula 1 has enjoyed a surge in growth and popularity, with 24 Grands Prix scheduled for next season, with the Spanish Grand Prix also scheduled to move to Madrid in 2026.

Alonso pulled out of Formula One at the end of 2018 after becoming disillusioned but is keen to stay after returning in 2021 with Alpine.

Alonso talks about the future of Formula One

“I thought my return to Formula 1 was good at the driving level, because I felt lost at home. I wanted to be in Formula 1,” Alonso said. DAZN.

He added: “2023 was a kind of justification, and in 2024 and 2025 I see myself full of strength, desire, energy and optimism.”. Then the results always depend on you and your competitors.

“You can never promise results, but I feel good energy to keep improving with the team. It's good for motorsport, because the popularity of Formula 1 is increasing every year.

“We have more and more young people following the sport, the circuits are full, a record calendar and new countries wanting to join Formula 1.

“Everything feels like the crest of a wave and I don't want to watch it from the couch.

“I don't know if I will keep my smile in 2024 from 2023.

“You always need results. But what I am clear about is that the team is motivated and hungry to win.

“She's young, there's an enthusiasm and a different attitude to racing.”
