Another Australian is set to move to the Premier League, with Adelaide United goalkeeper Joe Josie said to be on the verge of joining Aston Villa.
That's according to Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports News, who reported on Wednesday that Villa are “close to signing” Gauci, who is currently involved in the Asian Cup with Australia.
Gauci would be a depth option at Villa given that the club's first-choice glove player Emiliano Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina, was voted the best player in the world in that position at the Ballon d'Or ceremony late last year.
The 23-year-old, who first signed for United ahead of the 2020-21 season following a stint with Melbourne City, in April extended his contract with Adelaide until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Gauci's impressive start to the final season of the A-League was rewarded with a call-up to the Socceroos squad for the AFC Asian Cup.
Speaking to Adelaide United media after receiving the news, Gauci said it was a “proud moment” in his career.
“I think it's the biggest tournament outside of the World Cup that Australia can play in, so it's a real proud moment now to be involved and looking forward to creating more memories this time around,” Gauci said.
“I just found out [was in the squad] Through a message this morning [Friday].
“It's something I've been aiming for.
“As we come to the end of the year, I reflect on the year, and I think at the beginning of the year, I didn't think I would be in the position I'm in now, so I'm very grateful.
“For me, it was about coming back to Adelaide (after the November transfer window) and focusing on my game and hopefully doing well enough to get a call-up, which I was able to do.”
