Hayward Gallery will present an exhibition by Tavares Strachan titled There is light somewhere From 11 June until 1 September 2024. Known as one of the most innovative and creative artists of his generation, Strachan has been creating bold and innovative exhibitions over the past two decades.
The diverse exhibition will focus on how Strachan's art draws attention to issues of cultural visibility. She is committed to telling the tales of unknown explorers and marginalized cultural pioneers.
The exhibition will feature three thematic parts of Strachan's work. Part One will focus on Strachan's early work, examining his exploratory experiments and challenging historical stereotypes. It will pay tribute to pioneers such as Matthew Henson, an African American explorer. Part two will focus on Strachan Encyclopedia of Invisibility, which includes 17,000 entries detailing extraordinary figures forgotten by history. Finally, the focus will be on Strachan's most recent work, which explores Strachan's visionary redrawing of lost connections to traditional African cultures.
Speaking about his art, Strachan said:My practice as an artist is to strive to uncover hidden histories and tell lost stories with a weight that matches the profound nature of the characters I speak about. I've always thought of filmmaking as a form of storytelling, a way for us to engage with things that might be difficult to understand in the normal course of our day.
