Atmospheric river brings rain to Southern California

SAN DIEGO — Widespread rain is expected in San Diego County over the weekend, with more rain expected Monday.

The moisture will come from two different storm systems moving through Southern California: one expected Saturday into Saturday night and the other on Monday, said Alex Tardy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Does El Niño live up to the hype?

The meteorological official explained that the Goi River will be “very wide” at the end of the week. For those who are not familiar with the term, this refers to a billowing plume of condensed water vapor in the atmosphere responsible for producing large amounts of rain and snow.

The first spells of rain are expected to fall early Saturday morning, with heavy rain falling during the overnight hours. Tardy said there is a slight chance of thunderstorms.

The rain is expected to stop on Sunday, with most of the rain expected to end in the morning hours, according to the NWS forecast. However, high waves will continue.

It's safe to say motorists can expect a rainy trip to start the work week as the second storm is expected to be wetter than the first.

“Now for the rest of the month, it looks like we're not going to get any more rain, so things will dry out after Monday. It's just a one-two punch,” Tardy said.

Some rain may continue into Tuesday, and the second half of the week is expected to be dry and warm, according to the NWS.
