11:15 p.m—Power has been restored to the residential campus, and classes can meet on Wednesday as expected.
Due to the effects associated with winds across Santa Cruz County, teachers are encouraged to communicate instructional plans for Wednesday classes with students, and students are encouraged to seek updates from instructors. Trainers should anticipate that educational technology may not be fully operational due to power outages.
The high winds created a number of challenges across our region, with downed power lines, closed roads, and spotty cellular and internet connectivity. We encourage everyone to do their best to communicate and be patient and understanding with one another.
Employees affected by high winds should discuss with their manager any questions or concerns about their ability to operate as planned. Managers are encouraged to be flexible with employees.
9:45 p.m—The residential campus is still without basic power. PG&E has not yet provided a data recovery time. Power has been restored to Westside Research Park and Coastal Science Campus.
Instructions as to whether to hold morning classes (8 a.m. to noon) will be sent and emailed to the campus community at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Updates about the rest of the day will follow at 10am
If power is restored and classes can be held as scheduled, teachers should not rely on educational technology to operate fully.
9:30 pm—Diners at College 9 / John R. Lewis College and Porter College are open until 11 p.m
7:54 p.m. – Power has been restored to Westside Research Park and Coastal Science Campus. Backup and emergency power generators at Science Hill are operational.
7:05 p.m– Dinner halls are open for College 9 / John R. Lewis College and Porter’s for dinner and late-night service. The Oakes Café will remain open until 8pm and the Crown Hall Restaurant will remain open for a “to go” meal only until around 8pm.
6:48 p.m—Power is available on the Residential Campus, Westside Research Park, and Coastal Science Campus. PG&E has not yet filed Estimated recovery time.
Campus electricians are currently diagnosing and resolving an issue with the cogeneration plant, which provides backup power to many utilities on the residential campus.
The campus will provide an update when it has more information to share about energy recovery and the status of the cogeneration plant. The campus community is encouraged to exercise extra caution with the current outages and severe weather conditions.

There is also a frost warning from midnight Wednesday through 9 a.m. Thursday. The warning warns of north-northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph at higher elevations. Low temperatures of 34 degrees will lead to frost.

Watch out for fallen tree limbs and power lines. Extra precautions should be used when driving. Campus emergency personnel monitor conditions on and around campus and will respond as necessary. If you see a cut electrical line, never go near it, even if it doesn’t energize or spark. Report all fallen wires to 911.
IT Services recommends that all computers, scanners, and other electronic equipment be turned off and unplugged when not in use to protect devices from power surges.
