“Research is a major part of my work, and research into history — especially African history, philosophy, and time — is a major interest,” Kamai Aiwa said in a statement about her music and her focus on the effects of British colonialism. “Europe and Africa have had a very intimate and brutal relationship over time. I'm interested in exploring that relationship between colonialism and liberation, in this case in Great Britain.
“Displacement and its impacts have not been adequately discussed,” Iowa added. “The focus needs to be on PTSD caused by displacement, and since we have the opportunity to learn about things that are happening in the world, we also have the opportunity to learn about ourselves. We have been through many different acts of systemic violence.”
