CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The area adjacent to the London Independent School District is the fastest growing district, so in order to continue that growth, Nueces County Commissioners allocated $1 million to build a massive detention pond near the crosstown extension.
“Right now, we have major drainage and flooding issues in that area, and this is a very proactive way to move forward with something,” Pickett said. 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney.
The county is also getting help with this project from two landowners, who have agreed to give up 7.5 acres of their land on which the county will build the pond, which will carry water into the Oso Creek tributary system.
“We think it will be a powerful tool to help with the infrastructure development that is happening on the South Side,” Robert Gonzalez said.
This land is owned by attorney Robert J. Gonzalez and local businessman John Tamez.
Chesney said the donation will help develop the South Side.
“This will have a huge impact on the growth of London and the London region and the London flooding problems we now face,” he said.
Gonzalez wasn't sure what the market value of the land was, but he said a small plot of land nearby sold for just over $1 million.
“Historically, we have always given back,” he said. “We think it's the right thing to do. We love our community.”
Once the transfer of land ownership to the county is complete, it may take up to 18 months before the project is finished.
