Ethereum core developers have deployed the Dencun upgrade, integrating the initial Dankharding technology (EIP-4844) on the Goerli testnet – serving as a precursor to its expected launch on the mainnet.
The Dencun upgrade was performed on the Goerli testnet at approximately 1:35 a.m. ET, the core developers confirmed in a live stream. The upgrade has faced hurdles, including a potential “chain split” due to issues with clients being able to sync with each other. Customer teams are expected to investigate the matter and issue a fix. The network is waiting for the end.
It should be noted that customer issues often arise on testnets during critical upgrades. Customer teams typically resolve synchronization errors before mainnet launch.
To prepare for this transition, the development team chose to take a phased approach – initially implementing the upgrade on different testnets.
Today it has been deployed on Goerli, the first testnet for the Dencun upgrade. The next implementation steps include activating Dencun on the Sepolia testnet on January 31, followed by the Holesky testnet on February 7. The final mainnet is expected to be released by the end of the first quarter of 2024.
What is Dencon?
The central feature of this Dencun deployment (on Goerli) is the introduction of EIP-4844 – a new transaction mechanism known as ephemeral blobs or metadata splitting. This approach allows off-chain caching and access of data by Ethereum nodes to reduce storage requirements. This is expected to significantly reduce transaction costs for Ethereum dApps, especially leveraging Layer 2 chains.
