Yard Act have released “We Make Hits,” the latest preview of their upcoming second LP Where is my utopia? – Departure on March 1 via the island. It follows the previous cuts, “Dream Job” and “Petroleum.” Watch the James Slater-directed video below.
“‘We Make Hits’ began as most Yard Act songs do these days, in Ryan’s spare bedroom,” band member James Smith explained in a statement. “He recorded a couple of bass lines and I went to throw some lyrics over the top just to see what might happen. I was thinking about how things have changed a lot for us over the last few years when I realized we were sitting around a laptop trying to make each other laugh, sipping black coffee and lifting Our heads out the window to smoke cigarettes every hour or so. All that really changed during the writing process was that, thanks to my baby, we were at Ryan's house instead of mine and that Ryan now had his own place, which was nice. Despite the external blast Behind closed doors, we were the same, and I'm grateful for that.
“You can see the sarcasm and silliness on the surface of 'We Make Hits' without much effort, but at its core, to me, it's really an ode to friendship and the sheer joy you feel when you're making music with the people you cherish in your life,” Smith continued. “Meanwhile, in the Yardiverse, we get the origin story of hitmen Dynamite Dave and Dudley Glasses. A righteous tale about the trappings of late capitalism, and the compromises we sometimes have to make to survive.
