The UK is preparing to return to freezing temperatures after an unusually mild start to the week and could see the mercury drop to -2°C along with widespread blizzards and frosts.

The Met Office is expecting cooler weather across the UK

The Brits are set for freezing temperatures to return as the week progresses with snow showers and lows of -2C.

It was very mild Monday with the mercury high up to 16C in Suffolk and it was broadly in the very low teens which is well above average for that time of year.

But it will start to cool down and there will be a definite icy feel by the end of the week with the wind factor included.

Looking ahead, the country is still waiting for Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) at the beginning of March that could lead to frigid temperatures and even another monster from the east.

Looking at this week and Wednesday morning, weather maps show that when snow returns with a few inches in central Scotland and a light breeze across parts of England while temperatures drop to -2C.

It will be another fairly mild day on Tuesday with some wet weather in parts before a change in weather sets in.

“Behind that weather front we’ve got a change in wind direction so that the northwest wind brings a cooler feel to a lot of us, a bit of cloud, some rain as well, and that rain is really dragging its heels into the south east and east Anglia, a little bit wintry thing over the hills but it’s February After all,” said BBC forecaster Helen Willetts.

“I think what we will notice is more blue skies. Indeed a shimmering sky for many but temperatures will be 3C or 4C lower than they have been, back to average.

“Now there could be a few more winter showers going south through the night Wednesday into Thursday, I think the main thing Thursday morning is the cold start.

“Widespread frost is due to many and it won’t be the only frost we see in the coming nights either. A series of high pressure.”

The weather will also be cooler over the weekend with clearer skies.

“And then that high pressure comes back to push those weather fronts away, and the isobars open up so that it gets less windy as we move into the weekend, which means we’ll have some frosts at night. So we’ll have some cold nights coming into the weekend again,” she added. Mrs. Willetts.
