Court documents show that Clarkson testified that she had been telling Blackstock for years that she wanted a spot on “The Voice,” but he claimed to her in response that network executives weren't interested because they were “looking for a more sex symbol type” like singer Rihanna.
Clarkson went on to claim that Blackstock told her that NBC executives “had to have someone black. … They had to have something diverse,” and that she and singer Blake Shelton, who was a coach on “The Voice” at the time, “They were very similar.”
When her lawyer asked her how she remembered this exchange so well years after it happened, Clarkson replied: “Well, the wife doesn't forget the time she was told she wasn't a sex symbol, so that remains.”

Clarkson's bitter divorce
Clarkson finally signed on to The Voice for the show's 14th season in 2018. She filed for divorce from Blackstock in June of 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage, and they finally settled their bitter court battle over their two young children, who are now 9 7 years, and the farm they owned in Montana in March 2022.
“What I'm dealing with is hard because it involves more than just my heart. Clarkson blames her “ego” for staying in the marriage
During an appearance on We Can Do Hard Things in June last year, Clarkson said that “ego” was one of the reasons she stayed in her marriage as long as she did.
“I'm like, 'I can do this.' I can handle a lot. My ego says: “I can control my actions.” I can control my reactions. “I can do this and I can reach this person and I can get through them,” she said. “It becomes a little bit of your ego that gets in your way.”
Clarkson went on to say that she found her new single relationship status “liberating.”
