A powerful storm is bringing snow, flooding and severe weather to parts of the United States this week. Blizzard conditions are likely on the Plains, where severe storms, flooding and power outages are possible from the south through the northeast. North Dakota is the only US state that was not under some type of weather warning on Monday.

After an active weekend in the Northeast, another major winter weather system is moving across the central and eastern United States, bringing the chance for blizzard conditions, severe weather, flooding and widespread power outages.

A strong low pressure system has begun in the southwest and will move across the central Plains into the Midwest, eventually ending its fury along the East Coast before exiting by midweek.

In fact, 49 of the 50 states were under some type of weather warning on Monday. North Dakota was the only state not included in any watches, warnings or advisories issued by the National Weather Service. Separate weather systems were impacting Hawaii with heavy rain and Alaska with blizzard conditions.

North Dakota was the only US state not under some type of weather alert on Monday, January 8, 2024.

Here are the latest impacts and timing of the winter weather system hitting the continental United States to start the work week.

Winter is beginning to wake up, with blizzard warnings and winter storm warnings in place from New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle northeastward through Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. These alerts will continue to expand as the system moves from the Plains into the Midwest on Tuesday.

The snow will also be accompanied by strong winds, which will limit visibility as the snow falls.

As cold air wraps around this low pressure system, snow totals will range from several inches to a foot as snow bands form.

Severe weather and floods hit the south

The Southeast will be exposed to severe weather overnight Monday and Tuesday, as this system pulls a lot of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, increasing the chances of strong thunderstorms and flash flooding.

Severe thunderstorms will likely extend from Texas into Florida until early Tuesday, bringing conditions for damaging winds, hail and tornadoes. There is a threat for overnight tornadoes as storms continue to move across the Gulf Coast into Tuesday.

In addition to the threat of severe weather, heavy rain will increase the risk of flash flooding across the entire Southeast.

Widespread power outages and possible flooding in the northeast of the country

As the system continues to move eastward across the United States, the storm will bring heavy rain and strong winds to the northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

With already saturated ground and several inches of snow across the interior after the weekend, heavy rain combined with strong winds could down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages.

Strong winds will continue until Wednesday as the system leaves the region.
