If this is your first time in mykonos and you are not sure if it is worth a visit, then continue to read. You may have heard a lot about this island and perhaps not all were good. Yes, mykonos is one of the most popular Greece islands, however people have very mixed feelings about it. Some say it is crowded, tourist and freezing. Others say it is their favorite Greek island for its beauty, activities and nightlife. So who is the correct?

As with everything in life, gravity depends on the view of the beholder; This means that beauty is personal and is affected by individual experiences and cultural rules. What someone finds is attractive, and another may not. However, there are good and bad things that can be said about mykonos and as soon as you realize them, you can decide whether the island is worth a visit or not.

How did Mikonos gain her fame?

Mykonos is a very barrier island with a total area of about 85.5 square kilometers (33 square miles) with a population of 10 thousand permanent population only. The wise landscape, not even comparable to other lush Greek islands such as Crete, Kivalonia or Corvo. So why are you very popular?

Once again in 1950, Miconos was a simple fishing island where the most common tourist attractions were hunting boats in the port and hand.

However, this changed in the 1960s, when celebrities like Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Unasis began to repeat the island. This helped mykonos to establish itself as a luxurious destination with my world, a vibrant night life and a gay scene.

Mykonos succeeded in attracting wealthy entrepreneurs because the island felt that it had no rules. More and more tourists who wanted to escape from their routine, which is dominated by work and enjoying a bohemian lifestyle flowing here, so Mikonos became a paradise.

What deserves a visit on the island of Mekonos

Although it is not one of my favorite Greek islands, mykonos has a few cute places to visit.

    Mikonos city

The biggest appeal on the island is the city of Mykonos (also known as Chora), a charming maze of narrow alleys with white blue houses, colored pugnville, a large range of luxury small stores and luxury restaurants. When visiting mykonos, you should not miss:

    Iconic air mills

This is especially beautiful at sunset. The white rounded windmills with pointed surfaces and small windows were an important source of income for the island’s residents.

    Panagia Farborantan Church

This unique church, which is located in the Castro neighborhood, is one of the most photographed churches in Greece. The distinctive thing in the church is that it consists of five small churches, which was built one on top or next to the other. The five churches have not been built at one time, but gradually over the centuries.

    The small Venice neighborhood

Little Venice is one of the places that are really worth visiting on Mykonos Island. It is not only beautiful and romantic, but it is also very authentic. The neighborhood is equipped with colored old homes hanging on the edge of the ground.

Many of these historical homes have been converted into a variety of comfortable restaurants, modern bars, shops and night clubs overlooking the sea.

    Matawiani Street

Matogianni (Matoyianni) is the most popular street in mykonos for a good reason. What makes it really unique is its cobbled land and white houses. There are beautiful flowers decorating every corner while you are walking.

But perhaps the largest attraction in this street is the stores of many stores and souvenirs. If you want to go shopping in Mykonos, this is where you will come.

    The old port of Mikonos

Mykonos contains two perpetrators, located two kilometers away: The Old Port, which offers local boats and the new Tourlos/Tourlos that It offers phrases and all the cruise ships that accumulate in mykonos. Although there is nothing special about the new port, the old port has a lot for it.

It is located in the heart of mykonos directly, behind the Little Venice, which is an ancient port full of life 24 hours a day. This is where you will find the traditional fish market in addition to many stores, bars and restaurants. Around its rocky berth, you can still see the traditional wooden vessels used to fish. The northern part of the old port is the place where you leave many organized tours and small cruises.

Also, the coincidence of Sorers, which lined up on the historic port in the city of Maykonos. The corridor begins at the northern edge of the old port and continues all the way to the air mills. Walking together with this homes is an experience in itself.

    Delos Island

If you are a fan of Greek myths, visiting the neighboring island of Delos is a must and an adventure that you should not miss if you are in Mykonos. This is an ancient Greek site that is important historically as you can explore the well -reserved rubble including the Apollo Reserve, the Lions, and other important landmarks.

Delos is an uninhabited island, so there are no accommodations, no airports, and there are no direct phrases from continental Greece. The only way to visit it is to book a phrase from the nearest island, which is mykonos. During the summer months, the routes of ferries are also available from the other islands (NAXOS, Paros, Tinos, Syros).

    Beaches

Mykonos contains many beautiful beaches, most of which have easy access, and the depths of the water slowly and crystalline water. However, no beaches are not compared to Ethaka, Zakinhosh or Crete.

Most of the beaches in myconi are very crowded, especially during the peak season. But if you use a boat you can reach some virgin.

Some of the beaches worth visiting are:

    • Fish Factat BeachA friend of the family’s friend on the southeastern coast of Tikonos
    • Psarou BeachRomantic region with water and live bars
    • Platz Jialos: A vital beach with chairs, umbrellas, bars and restaurants
    • Super Beach Paradise: A beach known for its parties and clear blue water

The negative aspect of the Mekonos visit

There are quite a few defects that make mykonos less accustomed than other Greek islands.

    High costs

On the least positive side, the costs associated with the miconos visit are very high. Starting with accommodations and continuing to rent boats and restaurants, everything is madly charged with this island.

Nothing about stores, most of them sell designers, handbags and jewelry at higher prices than that you will find in stores in Paris!

    Arid landscape

Another disappointment is the landscape of the island, which is relatively flat with a few mountainous and arid areas completely. It is mostly a barren rocky terrain with a little vegetation and a lack of rivers. This is a typical feature of the Cycladic Islands in Greece. For this reason, mykonos is not a friendly walking destination.

    Roads

The roads in mykonos are tight and double with cars, buses, trucks, bicycles and asthma. The sidewalks are destroyed (often lined with garbage) or not present. You can also throw pits in this mixture.

    Crowds

Perhaps the most annoying thing in mykonos is the huge crowds. The island is full of tourists not only during the peak season, but almost a year. We visited late October, which is the end of the shoulder season, and every day there were 4-5 large tourist ships based in the port.

If you are considering that each of these journey ships carry at least 5,000 passengers, this means that at least 25,000 to 30,000 people wander around the small streets in the city of Maykonos at the same time.

This is in addition to the thousands of tourists already on the island and those that arrived daily from the main land in the large buses through the ferries boats. Cracks It makes it difficult to find a quiet and peaceful place to relax on the island and will eventually lead to environmental deterioration, which affects local ecosystems and local communities.

    When should you visit mekonos?

The peak season in mykonos is June to September, so hotels prices are at their highest levels, beaches, restaurants and night clubs are packed. Summer is also the time of parties, so expecting loud concerts and music everywhere. Not to mention XLSIOR in August, a five -day battery festival that attracts about 30,000 gay celebrities!

It can be said that the shoulder season (April to early June, late September and October) is a more enjoyable time to visit. The temperatures are less while the water is still perfect for swimming. However, do not expect empty beaches or decrease in accommodation.

The image that removes myconi in OctoberThe image that removes myconi in October
    Mykonos visit in October

In the winter, it is so cold that sunbathing and swimming, but this is the only time of the year in which you will see empty beaches and a lot of accommodation. The good thing is that many restaurants in Mykonos remain open throughout the year, unlike other Greek islands. On the least positive side, winter can bring limited fierce storms and phrases.

How long should you spend on myonos?

We spent 3 full days in Mykonos and we felt that this was about the time for this island. We spent the morning to explore the beaches in the afternoon in visiting stores, restaurants and bars in mykonos. One afternoon, we arrested a boat to the holy island of Delos.

    How to get to mekonos?

There are repeated phrases that connect Mayonos Island to Athens from Ravenna and Biraus. During the peak season, high -speed Catamrans connects mykonos with many other Cycladic islands, including Santorini and Paros.

Mekonos Airport also has flights throughout the year between Athens and many European destinations. Although Mykonos is a small island, I recommend renting a car, bicycles or ATV to explore it properly.

    In conclusion

Whether mykonos deserves a visit or does not depend completely on what you are looking for on a vacation: If you want a scene of vibrant nightlife, beautiful resorts, amazing stunning homes, and they were fine with crowds and high prices, mykonos may be great option.

On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed and budget -friendly experience, you may want to think about other Greek islands. Although it is part of many Greek islands tracks, mykonos is a very expensive tourist island. We liked it, but we will not think about returning there. There are a lot of islands beauty to visit in Greece.
