Indian food, performances and culture will be showcased at an event organized by Rayjon Share Care.
Culture & Cuisine: India is on Saturday, April 13 at the Communitaire Francophone Center on Rapids Parkway, running from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Spokesperson Manjeet Singh said one of the main things will be the food that is loved in the community.
He also said there will be a bit of development.
“There will be stations, like an ice cream station for dessert, and a pani puri station, so once you walk in, we direct you to those stations,” Singh said.
He explained that pani puri is an appetizer and is a shell filled with chickpeas, potatoes and spices.
There will be vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
They will also get some entertainment, Singh said.
“We have local artists from all over India, and then we have the bhangra team, which is a folk dance from Punjab, and they come from Toronto, from the GTA and they will take the stage and teach people the moves.” He said.
It will be a great event, Singh said.
“I really wanted to bring what's happening in the GTA, what's happening in New York, and in Montreal among those Indian communities for special occasions where culture is a big thing, food is a big thing,” he said.
Raygon Executive Director Heather Smith says it's an opportunity to highlight different cultures within the community.
“To learn more about the people who actually live and work in Sarnia-Lambton, meet some people you've never met before, learn something you haven't learned, and try new food,” she said.
Tickets are available online for $100. Students cost $50 and children 12 and under are free.
Rayjon Share Care is also doing something new when it comes to ticket sales.
They offer a postpaid option.
When purchasing tickets, people can add $25 to help someone who wouldn't otherwise be able to attend.
“We want everyone at the table, so these tickets will be distributed to community partners to make sure that someone who won't be able to attend will be there as well,” Smith said.
Proceeds from culture and cuisine will support some initiatives in the areas of education, healthcare and women’s empowerment.
