Andrew Bird has announced a new album of jazz standards, Sunday morning situation. Out May 24 marks the first release of the Andrew Bird Trio, featuring Bird, drummer Ted Burr, and bassist Alan Hampton. Listen to their take on “I Fall in Love So Easily” and “I'm Used to Her Face” below.
Sunday morning situation It was recorded live at Valentine Studio in California and includes additional contributions from Jeff Parker on guitar and Larry Goldings on piano.
“When I was in my 20s, I lived in an old hotel apartment in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago,” Byrd said in a statement. “It was cheap and populated mostly by retired Jesuit priests and nuns from nearby Loyola University. The gym had old 10-speed Schwinn bicycles mounted on cinder blocks for the low-rent crowd, an old swimming pool where they played opera, and the steam room was a A club for the local Russian mob. Most Saturday nights, I would stay up listening to a radio show called “Blues Before Sunrise” on WBEZ from 12 to 4 a.m. The DJ, Steve Cushing, played rare old 78 rpm recordings of Blues, jazz and gospel. Then I would sleep for a few hours and wake up to The Dick Buckley Show, also on WBEZ, which showcased what he called the “Golden Age” jazz of the 1930s and 1940s. My love for a particular era of jazz through the mid-20th century was constant through many transitions in My works, the bulk of which were not jazz at all. Once I had some distance between me and this time when I was under its influence, I wanted to immerse myself in it again.
