Lala Lala's Lily West has announced her first project under her name, a music album titled If I were a real man, I would be able to break the neck of a suffering bird. It will be released on Friday, April 5 via Hardly Art, and the song “holyholyholy” will be released today. Check it out below.
In a statement about the record, West shared:
Most of “If I Were a Real Man I Could Break the Neck of a Suffering Bird” was written and recorded in January 2022 during my LungA Land program stay in Seyðisfjörður in Iceland. Seyðisfjörður is a town of about 650 people located on the east coast of Iceland, and during the winter the sun never enters the fjord. Some of the work that I and other residents have been involved in throughout the programme; Making knives, backpacking in a blizzard, learning about Icelandic herbs, geology, and history, having a lemongrass-themed dinner party, and sleeping outside. I also made field recordings of the environment surrounding the city – ice, grass, water, rocks, snow, animals and people.
I never thought about making a music album, nor was it my intention while making these field recordings. So the process felt very natural, organic, almost private. I hope the music will be able to evoke the rhythm, impact and connection I felt with the landscape of Seyðisfjörður, as well as my constant attempt to connect with the divine.
